Lethbridge Hurricanes help raise $21,000 for United Way

At United Way Game Night on Saturday, March 8, volunteers were on hand to help Executive Director, Jeff McLarty (far right) accept a cheque from Lethbridge Hurricanes Business Manager, Terry Huisman (far left).

The amount was raised through raffles for an autographed player jersey at each home game of the season.

Shelby Karas (centre left) and Katarina Schnerch (centre right), representing volunteers from U of L's Kappa Pi Chi Female Fraternity, played a big role in helping to raise the money.

Karas, the current Community Service Chair for Kappa Pi Chi organized more than 30 of her sisters to volunteer to help sell game-night programs and raffle tickets at a large portion of this season’s games. Schnerch, was one of the most frequent volunteers.

In all, the United Way had more than 80 unique volunteers work at more than 30 home games, for a total of more than 700 hours combined. Volunteers included other student groups like U of L’s JDC West Business Team, community groups like the Kinette Club of Lethbridge, groups from local businesses and many individual volunteers.

The funds will support United Way's Community Fund which is distributed annually to human service agencies throughout Lethbridge and South Western Alberta.
